Consolidated Maritime Labour Convention gained in 'spirit of unity'

10 March 2006

Welcoming the breakthrough agreement on the new superconvention ITF General Secretary David Cockroft said: "The adoption of the new Consolidated Maritime Labour Convention by the ILO Maritime Conference was a major step forward for the rights and social conditions of seafarers everywhere"

"On this occasion the Seafarers' Group and the Shipowners' Group worked well together to ensure the introduction of the first integrated  International Labour Standard which will be enforceable by flag states and by port states.  For the first time in the history of the International Labour Conference, there were no formal objections to the credentials of any of the seafarer or shipowner delegates.  This was because, in the spirit of unity which prevailed in Geneva, the ITF did not proceed with a formal objection to the credentials of the substitute workers' delegate, Arkady Lyschenko of the 'Zaschita' trade union although we had clear evidence that he had represented the management of the company which employs him PRISCO Shipping, at negotiations with the ITF."

"Thanks to positive intervention by the Russian government and cooperation by Gennardy Starchenko of the WTWUR, the representative of the ITF affiliated SUR was given the position of substitute worker delegate.  We are actively encouraging closer cooperation  between the genuine trade unions of seafarers in Russia - both the SUR and the WTWUR.  In future, however, we trust that the Russian government will not agree to give someone who everyone knows represents his employers' interests first the status of an international representative of seafarers"
