ITF’s biggest ever congress will be first in Africa

29 June 2006

The ITF is to hold its biggest ever world congress in Durban, South Africa, from 2 to 9 August. Already 1,107 people from 342 unions in 108 countries have registered for the event, which will be the first to be held in Africa.

Congress sets the ITF’s agenda for the next four years and this year’s theme is Organising Globally: Fighting for our Rights.

ITF General Secretary David Cockroft commented: “The last two congresses affirmed the need to mobilise unions to face the new challenge of global employers, and to globalise our responses, building on a worldwide community of transport unions to develop new ways of organising.”

“In the last four years the world has become even more globalised, and the ITF and its unions intend to continue to set the agenda for workers in the transport arena. Organising Globally: Fighting for our Rights is about making the ITF into even more of an action body, which can use the forces of international solidarity to build stronger and more effective unions worldwide.”

A full guide to the ITF’s 41st Congress, how it works and what will be discussed can be found at www.itfglobal.org/congress where press releases, daily updates, interviews and photos will also appear.
